For several years, I have photographed members of Brussels’ cross-dressing community inside their homes, private rooms, and personal environments. What began as curiosity gradually became a long-term exploration of identity, self-expression, and the relationship between appearance and belonging.

The individuals portrayed in this series do not seek to become someone else. They remain fully themselves while using clothing, accessories, gesture, and personal style to express parts of their identity that often remain unseen in everyday life. Away from public assumptions and stereotypes, the photographs reveal moments of intimacy, vulnerability, humour, confidence, and reflection.

Created through trust and ongoing relationships, the project moves beyond questions of gender alone. It reflects on the universal desire to be recognised, accepted, and comfortable within one’s own image. The bedrooms, living rooms, and private spaces in which these portraits are made become places where personal freedom can exist without explanation or judgement.

The Cross-Dressers emerged from my long-standing involvement with Brussels’ LGBTQIA+ community and from years of conversations, friendships, and shared experiences. Rather than observing from a distance, I approach the work through proximity and collaboration, allowing each participant to shape the way they wish to be seen.

The project has received international recognition through exhibitions, awards, and official selections at photography festivals across Europe, North America, and Asia.
